Free/low cost legal assistance:

Yolo County Superior Court Family Law Facilitator’s Office/Self-Help Center. The Yolo County Family Law Facilitator’s Office/Self-Help Center provides legal information and assistance (including court forms, rules, and procedures) to self-represented parties in cases involving the following: divorce, parentage, child custody and visitation, child support, cases involving the Department of Child Support Services, spousal support, probate guardianship and conservatorship, small claims, unlawful detainers, domestic violence, civil harassment, elder abuse and workplace violence restraining orders, name changes and gender changes. All services are free of charge.

Yolo County Superior Court Small Claims Advisor.  The Small Claims Advisor is available for assistance with small claims questions. Small claims court is a special court where disputes are resolved quickly and inexpensively. You can sue for up to $10,000 if you are an individual or a sole proprietor. Legal Services of Northern California—Woodland Office. Legal Services of Northern California (LSNC) provides free civil representation to low-income clients in 23 Northern California counties, including Yolo County. LSNC helps with the following types of cases: housing, government benefits, health insurance, and other civil legal issues affecting low-income Californians.

Capital Pro Bono. Capital Pro Bono helps low-income residents from the Sacramento region (including Yolo County) with their civil legal problems, including cases in defense and bankruptcy; employment law; guardianship or conservatorship; family law; and estate planning and probate.

California Free Legal Answers (California Lawyers Association, Legal Access Alameda, American Bar Association). California Free Legal Answers is a virtual legal advice clinic in which qualifying users can post civil legal questions to be answered by pro bono attorneys licensed in California. Question topics include, but are not limited to, family law, divorce, custody, housing, eviction, homelessness, consumer rights, financial, work, employment/unemployment, health and disability, civil rights, juvenile and education law.

California Rural Legal Assistance. California Rural Legal Assistance provides free civil legal services to low-income residents of California’s rural counties, in the areas of employment and labor, housing, education, rural health, and leadership development. Nearest offices in Stockton, Oakland, and Marysville.

Empower Yolo. Empower Yolo provides 24-hour crisis intervention, emergency shelter, confidential counseling, training, legal assistance, and other services for individuals and families affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, human trafficking, and child abuse.

LawHelpCA.org. LawHelpCA, run by the Legal Aid Association of California and funded by the California State Bar, is an official, free legal resource with reliable information about common legal issues, written by reputable sources, on 16 general topics and over 140 specific subtopics. The site also provides an updated directory of legitimate and prescreened organizations that offer free or low-cost legal advice and representation.

ImmigrationHelp. ImmigrationHelp.org is a nonprofit that provides free immigration services and educational guides for work permits, DACA, and citizenship.
